Time is of the essence

Intensified heat waves, wildfires, floods and other extreme weather events are already causing widespread damage and the long-lasting impacts of carbon pollution mean that this damage will inevitably increase. A rapid, equitable transition to a low-carbon economy is urgently needed to minimize suffering and prevent climate-related disruptions of economies and democracies.

A rapid and equitable energy transition is achievable

Thanks to technological advances in the past few decades, renewable energy now provides a cost-effective way to meet virtually all of our current and future electric power needs. Policy incentives for renewable energy deployment and R&D, as well as electrification of surface transportation, buildings and industrial processes, makes a low-carbon economy feasible within the timeline envisioned in the Paris Climate Agreement. Policy changes of this magnitude will require significant collective action by NGOs, businesses and others.

Good policy proposals are necessary but insufficient

Those promoting a transition to a clean energy economy must anticipate opposition from well-funded industries wedded to outdated business models. Advocacy campaigns must be thoughtfully designed and executed in partnership with philanthropists and other allies to overcome this opposition.
